Behind the Scenes: How I Create Expressive, Bespoke Pet Portraits in Glasgow

There is something truly special about turning a blank sheet of paper into a characterful, lifelike portrait of someone’s beloved pet.

When clients receive their completed drawings, one of the most common questions I get asked is: “How do you capture their exact personality from just a photo?”

Here's a step-by-step look at how a bespoke portrait comes to life, from initial phone photos to the final hand-drawn details.

Step 1: Choosing Photos That Capture Their Personality

Every commission begins long before pencil touches paper. The first step is getting to know your pet through your favourite photographs and stories.

You do not need professional studio photography to order a pet portrait from a photo. In fact, standard smartphone pictures often capture their true character best. When reviewing images with clients, I look for:

  • Their signature pose: Is it an ears-up, alert look on a walk, or a soft, relaxed tilt of the head at home?

  • Clear eye detail: The eyes hold the soul of the drawing, so seeing their natural eye color and expression is key.

  • True coat texture: Identifying their natural fur patterns, whether wire-haired, silky, or curly.

If you are unsure which photo to choose, you can simply send over a selection. I can often combine details from multiple photos—using one image for exact lighting and another for their favourite expression.

Step 2: Composition and Setting the Proportions

Once we select the main reference image and confirm your preferred artwork size, I begin drafting the underlying composition.

Getting the proportions accurate at this stage is essential, particularly for larger pieces (like A2 or 50 × 70cm drawings) or double portraits featuring two pets together. I focus on:

  • Eye placement and angle: Setting the exact gaze so the portrait feels like it is looking right back at you.

  • Framing and balance: Positioning the subject naturally on the page so the artwork feels harmonious and elegant.


Step 3: Layering Texture, Depth, and Detail

This is where the artwork truly begins to take shape. Creating a realistic, expressive portrait requires building up delicate layers over many hours.

Rather than applying heavy shade all at once, I work slowly from dark tones to light highlights:

  1. Under-layers: Mapping out foundational shadows and form to give the portrait physical weight and depth.

  2. Fur Direction & Texture: Carefully building up individual strokes to match the flow and density of their coat.

  3. Bringing the Eyes to Life: I dedicate significant time to rendering the translucent reflections and warmth in their eyes, as this is what transforms a drawing into a living likeness.

Step 4: The Final Touches That Make It Them

A good drawing resembles a photograph, but a bespoke pet portrait captures the spirit of the animal.

Near the end of the process, I step back from the easel to focus on the unique quirks that make your pet one of a kind:

  • That distinct spot of colour on their nose or a gentle notch in an ear.

  • The delicate whiskers framing their muzzle.

  • That familiar, knowing expression that instantly says, "I run this house."

These subtle details are what create that emotional moment when you open the finished piece and say, "That is completely them."
