Tenement Tails: Capturing the City’s Spirit in Pastel

Tenement Tails: Capturing the City’s Spirit in Pastel

Finding Inspiration in Glasgow’s Iconic Symbols

Glasgow has always been a city full of character and history, and recently I’ve been inspired to celebrate this unique spirit through my art. My latest bespoke artwork, Tenement Tiles, draws on some of the city’s most iconic elements, the vibrant reds of Tennent’s Lager, the intricate beauty of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s stained glass windows, and the timeless patterns of tenement tiles.

As an artist known for my custom pet portraits, I love bringing the same attention to detail and personality to my city-inspired pieces, using pastel pencils to capture Glasgow’s essence.

Why Pastel Pencils for Glasgow’s Textures and Colours

Pastel pencils allow me to combine the precision of drawing with the softness and richness of pastels. They’re perfect for rendering the detailed patterns in Mackintosh’s designs and the layered textures of Glasgow’s tenement architecture.

Whether creating a bespoke pet portrait or a piece inspired by Glasgow’s heritage, this medium helps me bring out the warmth and character that define my work.

The Creative Process: From Cityscape to Sketchbook

I often start by exploring Glasgow on foot, sketchbook in hand, taking in the colours, shapes, and light that define the city. I take photographs and make quick sketches of details that catch my eye, a shard of stained glass catching the sun, a faded tile pattern on a doorway, or the bold lettering on a Tennent’s sign.

Back in my home studio, these observations become the foundation of my pastel pencil drawings. Layer by layer, I build up texture and depth, aiming to evoke not just the look but the feeling of Glasgow’s streets and heritage.
