How Craft Markets Shape My Work as a Glasgow Pet Portrait Artist

As a Glasgow-based pet portrait artist, craft markets have been a cornerstone of my creative journey. They’re more than just venues to sell my hand-drawn animal art, they’re vibrant spaces where I connect with pet lovers, swap ideas with fellow makers, and gather inspiration that directly shapes my custom pet portraits and bespoke animal drawings.

Listening to Pet Lovers at Craft Markets

Every market is a window into the hearts of pet owners. When someone stops at my stall, they often share delightful stories about their furry friends, the little quirks, the cheeky habits, the touching moments that make each pet one of a kind.

These conversations are invaluable. They don’t just inspire my art; they influence it. One memorable request came from a Jack Russell owner who wanted their dog painted holding a pint of Tennents. That portrait became one of my most talked-about pieces, sparking laughs and conversations at future markets.

By listening closely, I create portraits that don’t just look like pets, they capture their unique personality.

Finding Inspiration in the Market Community

Craft markets are creative melting pots. I meet incredible artists; painters, woodworkers, textile designers; each with their own style and story. We trade ideas, techniques, and encouragement.

This sense of community keeps my work evolving. I’ve experimented with new materials and bolder colours thanks to conversations with other stallholders. The lively atmosphere - the hum of chatter, the smell of coffee, the colourful displays - reminds me why I chose this path in the first place. Even on slow sales days, that energy fuels my creativity.

Turning Feedback into New Pet Portrait Styles

Markets are like live focus groups. I see firsthand which pieces people gravitate toward, whether that’s custom pet portraits, original pastel artworks, or small gift items like greeting cards, bookmarks, fridge magnets, and coasters featuring my animal art.

One recurring request was for more playful and colourful portraits. So, I introduced a line of quirky pastel pet artworks that have quickly become customer favourites. Without that feedback, I might never have ventured into this style.

Craft Markets as a Platform for Growth

Yes, sales matter. But the real value of these markets lies in the relationships and reputation they help me build. From Glasgow to Aberdeen and beyond, each event grows my audience, strengthens my brand, and sharpens my craft.

If you’d like to see where I’ll be next, my events page has all the details. Or, if you can’t make it in person, you can browse my ready-made animal art online, there’s 10% off until 31st August on all ready-made products (prints, bookmarks, coasters, magnets, and more).
