Reflection on 2024: A Year of Transformation and Creative Growth

As I sit here at the start of 2025, I can’t help but reflect on what has truly been a year of transformation—personally and professionally. This year has been about stepping into the unknown, following my heart, and embracing the challenges and rewards of pursuing a full-time career as an artist. It’s hard to believe that just a few months ago, I was still working my 9-to-5 job in Glasgow, wondering whether I could make the leap into something I was truly passionate about. But in October, I made the decision to take that leap, leaving the safety of my office job behind and diving headfirst into the world of art.

This post is a little personal reflection on how 2024 unfolded—how it changed me, challenged me, and brought me new opportunities.

The Big Leap: Leaving My 9-to-5

Making the decision to give up my stable job to become a full-time artist wasn’t easy. It took months of planning, financial adjustments, and a lot of inner reflection. The thought of leaving the structure and security of a 9-to-5 was daunting, but at the same time, I could feel that inner pull—an undeniable urge to dedicate myself fully to my art and to my passion for creating beautiful pet portraits.

October marked the official beginning of my full-time artistic journey, and I haven’t looked back since. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, from the initial fear and self-doubt to the thrill of finally having the freedom to create on my terms. The decision wasn’t just about making a living—it was about making a life that felt true to who I am, my purpose, and what I want to contribute to the world.

A Busy Holiday Season: 3 Christmas Makers Markets

One of the highlights of the year was participating in not one, but three Christmas makers markets here in Glasgow. These events were a mix of excitement, nervous energy, and pure joy. The chance to meet so many people, share my artwork, and talk about what I do was both humbling and inspiring.

It was incredible to see how people reacted to my pet portraits—some just stopping to admire the detail and expression in the work, while others shared stories about their pets, often with smiles, laughs, and even a few tears. I loved the connection that these events fostered, and they reinforced for me why I do this in the first place: art is about connection, about telling stories and celebrating the unique bonds we share with our animals.

I also loved being part of the vibrant, creative community here in Glasgow. The markets were full of talented artisans, crafters, and makers, and it felt empowering to be part of that energy. Plus, selling original artwork at these events gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward, knowing that people were responding to what I was doing.

17 Commissions: A Heartfelt Journey with Clients

One of the most exciting aspects of going full-time as an artist was the sheer number of commissions I had the pleasure of working on in 2024. Seventeen commissions—what a journey! Each portrait I created felt like an intimate experience, as I got to know each client’s pet and capture their unique personality. From dogs with playful expressions to cats with dignified stares, every piece told a story, and I felt privileged to be entrusted with that task.

Each commission was a reminder of why I chose this path—to create artwork that holds meaning for people and brings joy into their lives. The feedback I received from clients, some of whom were in tears when they saw their pets immortalised in pastel and graphite, was more rewarding than I ever imagined. There’s something so special about capturing not just the physical likeness of an animal, but their spirit—their quirks, their energy, the love they share with their human family.

Christmas Cards & Original Artwork: Spreading the Holiday Spirit

The holiday season also brought a new opportunity: I decided to print Christmas cards featuring some of my favourite pet portraits, as well as original artwork, to share with my clients and fans. This was my first time designing and selling cards, and it was an exciting venture. There’s something so magical about seeing your artwork on a product that people can give to their loved ones—something personal, something meaningful, and something that connects your work with the holiday spirit.

I also sold several original pieces during the markets and online. Every sale felt like a step forward, not just financially but emotionally. To know that someone wanted to hang a piece of my art in their home, or give it as a gift, was an affirmation that I was on the right path.

Lessons Learned & Looking Ahead

While 2024 has been a year of growth and success, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Balancing the business side of being a full-time artist with the creative work itself can sometimes feel overwhelming. There have been moments of self-doubt, sleepless nights, and the inevitable ups and downs that come with any big change. But each obstacle has taught me something valuable—about resilience, about trusting my process, and about having the courage to keep going even when things get tough.

Looking ahead to 2025, I’m filled with excitement and ambition. I plan to continue expanding my reach, taking on more commissions, and possibly even experimenting with new artistic techniques and products. There are so many ideas and dreams I have for the future, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.

One of the biggest takeaways from 2024 is this: the best decision I made was to follow my passion. It’s easy to get caught up in the safety of a stable job, but nothing compares to the joy and fulfilment I’ve found in making art every day. The journey is far from over, but I know that I’m exactly where I need to be.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me this year—whether by purchasing a portrait, sharing my work, or simply offering words of encouragement. Your support means the world to me.

Here’s to 2025 and beyond—more portraits, more connections, and more moments of joy. Let’s keep creating together!
