What 13 Markets Have Taught Me About Art, Community, and Pet Drawings

What 13 Markets Have Taught Me About Art, Community, and Pet Drawings

When I left my office job to become a full time artist, I promised myself I would start setting goals. At first I thought this would feel like the corporate KPIs I used to roll my eyes at, but working for myself has shown me how easy it is to keep moving without pausing to notice what is going well.

Recently I set a simple goal. I wanted to take part in 10 markets this year. Last weekend I realised I had already taken part in 13. That number still feels surreal and I wanted to stop and celebrate before rushing on to the next thing.

Each market has been its own adventure and has taught me something new. You can also explore my original artwork and art prints online

Celebrating Achievements as a Full Time Artist

To mark the milestone, I turned to a little jar I keep filled with small rewards. The slip I picked said “coffee and reading break.”

So I treated myself to a coffee and cookie from my favourite local bakery and spent an hour with Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. It was my first Baldwin novel and already a favourite. That moment of slowing down reminded me how important it is to savour progress.

What I Have Learned From 13 Markets

Each market has been its own adventure and has taught me something new. Here are a few lessons I will carry with me into the future.

Perfection is not always possible
At the beginning I wanted everything to be planned to the last detail. Then one market day I injured my back just an hour before set up. Not attending was not an option so I had to let go of perfect. The market still turned out to be a success.

Markets are about more than sales
Of course selling work is important, but the connections are what really matter. I have met so many inspiring people, from visitors who stop by to clients who buy, and of course other makers who have become friends and part of a creative community.

Kind words matter
Some of the most memorable moments have been the small comments people share about my work. A simple “this made me smile” can stay with me long after the day ends and remind me why I do what I do.

I have loved meeting visitors, chatting with clients face to face, and seeing their reactions to my custom pet portraits.

Why Reflection Matters

Reaching 13 markets has shown me how important it is to reflect on progress, no matter how small. It is easy to rush forward, ticking one goal off after another, but the real value lies in pausing, noticing, and celebrating. These moments of reflection keep me motivated and remind me that the journey is just as important as the achievements.
